Let’s get something straight—preparation is essential.
But it’s not everything.

You can rehearse for hours. Script every word. Polish every slide.
And still… something can feel off.

I’ve been there. And I’ve hosted thousands of shows on national TV, delivered keynote speeches across the country, and led seminars for executives and emerging leaders alike.

But once upon a time, a few years back, something hit me. In a moment I couldn’t quite explain, I felt the nerves spike. Energy dip. Confidence shake. The speech wasn’t going south, but I was feeling it.

So I took a pause and reflected.

What made my best talks click? What caused the uncomfortable ones to go sideways?

I found three things at the core of that internal tug-of-war:

1. Passion makes you human.

When you truly care about the message—when it’s personal, real, yours—it stirs emotion. That’s powerful. But it also leaves you a little exposed. And for speakers, that can feel like walking a tightrope.

2. Respect raises the stakes.

It’s easier to present to strangers than to those you admire or know well. The closer the ties, the more we want to get it right. And that pressure… is heavy.

3. Perfection is the performance killer.

The need to be perfect? That’s the trap.
It distracts you from what matters—presence, authenticity, connection. The magic doesn’t live in the perfectly polished script. It lives in the unscripted moment.

One of the best shows I ever hosted? Zero prep.
I was called in last-minute to sub on a Golf Channel panel. No run of show, no script, no time. I told my team:
“We’re not going to kill them with information—so let’s light it up with energy.”

It worked. Because I wasn’t worried about being perfect. I was free to be me.
