This week, as we celebrate the Fourth of July, the skies across the country will light up with fireworks. One of my most favorite holidays!
We get: Color. Energy. Emotion. Anticipation.
People will gather, look up, and wait for that moment – amidst all the fireworks – that makes them smile, cheer, maybe emember something from their childhood, and maybe even feel something bigger than themselves.

And that got me thinking about fireworks in our careers. Our brightest moments. And how we can create fireworks in our communication.
Because the best presenters, leaders, speakers, and brands are trying to do the same thing.
No, you do not need to be loud. You do not need to be over the top. You do not need to put on a show just for the sake of being noticed.
But you do need to move people. And you do need some color and some sparkle. That is the difference between simply delivering information and creating fireworks for your audience.
A great message should make people lean in. It should make them feel something. It should give them a reason to care. It should leave them with something they remember after the slides are gone, the meeting is over, and the room has cleared.
So in honor of the Fourth of July, here are my four things that will move people.
1. Clarity Moves People
People are not moved by confusion. They are not inspired by a message that is too crowded, too complicated, or too hard to follow.
If you want to create fireworks for your audience, start with clarity.
What do you really want them to know? What do you want them to feel? What do you want them to do?
Too often, presenters try to say everything. They pack in every detail, every data point, every slide, every credential, every possible reason someone should care.
But more is not always more. It can certainly be too much!
Sometimes the most powerful message is the one that has been sharpened. The one that is focused. The one that makes it easy for the audience to understand where you are taking them and why it matters.
Clarity gives people confidence in you. It helps them trust your message. It gives them a path to follow.
And when people can follow you, they are far more likely to be moved by you.

Energy from you transfers to them – we control the energy as communicators
2. Energy Moves People
Your audience will rarely bring more energy to your message than you do.
That does not mean you need to be the loudest person in the room. It does not mean you need to perform. It means you need to show up with belief.
Belief in your message. Belief in the moment. Belief that what you are sharing really matters.
Energy is not just volume. It is presence. It is pace. It is eye contact. It is conviction. It is the way you make people feel that you are fully invested in what you are saying.
People can tell when you are simply going through the motions. They can also tell when you care. And caring becomes contagious.
When you bring real energy to a room, you give people permission to pay attention. You create momentum. You make the message feel alive.
That is when communication starts to spark.

How can we make people feel something?
3. Emotion Moves People
Facts matter. Data matters. Expertise matters.
But emotion is what makes the message stick. People want to feel something. They really do.
People may respect your information, but they remember how you made them feel.
Did you make them feel seen?
Did you make them feel challenged?
Did you make them feel inspired?
Did you make them feel like something better is possible?
That is where the real connection happens. And the best communicators know their message is not just about what they want to say. It is about what the audience needs to feel in order to care.
That comes through story. It comes through examples. It comes through honesty. It comes through the willingness to be human, not just polished.
Emotion does not weaken your message. It strengthens it.
Because when people feel something, they are far more likely to remember something.
4. Purpose Moves People
The best fireworks show has a big finale. It builds toward something.
Great communication should too.
Think about this…. your audience should not leave wondering, “What was the point?” They should know exactly why the message mattered and what they are supposed to take from it.
Purpose gives your presentation power. It moves your message from information to impact. It answers the question every audience is quietly asking: Why does this matter to me?
If you can’t answer that, your audience probably can’t either.
Purpose is the difference between speaking at people and leading them somewhere.
It is the reason your message exists in the first place. And when your clarity, energy, and emotion are all connected to purpose, that is when the real fireworks happen.
Not because you entertained people. Because you moved them.

This Fourth of July, we’ll see plenty of fireworks in the sky. 250 years – it’s a big one for America! I’ll be in one of my favorite places – Hilton Head Island, SC. Hopefully on the beach or by the famed lighthouse.
But for leaders, speakers, presenters, sales professionals, and brands, the bigger question is this: Are you creating fireworks for your audience?
Are you giving them a reason to look up, lean in, care more, and remember what you said?
Because the goal is not simply to present. The goal is to move people.
And when you can do that with clarity, energy, emotion, and purpose, your message does more than land.
It lights people up. Thanks for reading!
